How to Buy a Used Car without Being Ripped Off
One of the scariest aspects of buying a used car is the sinking feeling that you could potentially be ripped off. However, if you take some steps to protect yourself, you will have the best chance of getting a used car that is not only dependable and looks good, but that also is in good mechanical working order. When you are buying a used vehicle from a dealership or an individual, remember that price is always negotiable.

  1. Start your car search early, at least two months before you are ready to buy. If you wait until your current vehicle is no longer running, you are going to a dealership out of desperation, making it more likely for you to be ripped off. Car salespeople can often determine if you are desperate, which leaves you vulnerable to overpaying for a vehicle.
  2. Decide the kind of car you want and the price you are willing to pay. Even if you are financing the car, have an amount in mind before you head to the dealership. Try to get the newest car possible, especially if this will be your prime transportation. The older the vehicle is, the more likely there could be serious problems lurking under the hood.
  3. Secure financing through your financial institution before you head to the dealership to give you more spending power. Many banks will qualify you for a specific amount, and then you can write the check to the dealership once you decide on the vehicle.
  4. Know your must-haves in a vehicle, such as a sunroof, automatic or standard transmission, front-wheel drive, color, size, and so forth. However, the more flexible you are, the better the deal you are likely to get.
  5. Head to a reputable dealer in your town, and test drive several vehicles to see which one suits you. Do not settle. If the dealer does not have what you are looking for, walk away and go to another dealership. Once you find one or two cars that you truly like, it is time to get down to business.

Check and print out the blue book value on the vehicle to see if the dealership is pricing it correctly. This gives you negotiation power. Have your own mechanic -- not the dealer's mechanic -- check out the car for a pre-purchase inspection. This is important because people can be ripped off buying a used car that may have serious problems. Do not allow yourself to get caught up in the moment. Taking a few extra steps when buying a used car ensures that you get the car you want at the price you want and have dependable transportation without being ripped off.
